Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. While a small girl, Ford was battling obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by the word association. Ford was intrigued by the acting profession during her teen years, and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place after her third try she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. The regular theatre work she performed brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies that were added to her show in the year 1996.
